Postgraduate Medical Programs The New Minimum Requirement Standard released by the NMC

A notification regarding the mandatory requirements for medical colleges planning to start new medical courses, expand the number of seats available for existing courses, establish new medical institutions, and establish assessment and rating regulations for 2023 has been released by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Published on2024-01-20

Following their undergraduate studies for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), medical graduates look for the best postgraduate medical courses. Specific assistance is essential in determining what to choose and why to choose the specific PG Medical branch for pursuing Postgraduate Medical courses. For better achievements for the future medical staff, recently NMC released the standard requirements for postgraduate medical programs.

A notification regarding the mandatory requirements for medical colleges planning to start new medical courses, expand the number of seats available for existing courses, establish new medical institutions, and establish assessment and rating regulations for 2023 has been released by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

New minimum requirement standards of NMC -

An institution that offers undergraduate and graduate instruction must meet the minimum requirements for undergraduate training outlined in the UG-MSR document by UGMEB in addition to the additional requirements for postgraduate instruction.

  • According to the new regulations, medical college faculty members will not be allowed to practice privately during college hours and will need to maintain a minimum attendance rate of 75%.
  • The hospital structure must adhere to local statutory requirements for hospitals as well as current national building standards.
  • Along with an increase in hospital beds, there will be an increase in faculty, infrastructure, and other staff in the fields of radiology, anaesthesiology (when there are surgical specialties), pathology, microbiology, and biochemistry.
  • If the department's workload increases, there will also be an increase in the faculty and infrastructure.
  • Patients in need of in-patient care should occupy about 80% of the hospital beds throughout the year.
  • Furthermore, either Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds or High dependency unit (HDU) beds should make up 15% of all hospital beds in the departments that are in charge of providing postgraduate medical educaion.
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds should make up at least 15% of all the beds in the department that offers post-graduate training. Total biochemical investigations should account for at least 15% of the total daily outpatient department load, and total microbiological investigations should be at least 5% of this load.
  • Each teaching department will have a single classroom large enough to hold a sufficient number of students for clinical case discussions and demonstrations.
  • For training post-graduate students, the institution must have sufficient internal laboratory and imaging facilities, which should be fully managed by the relevant department. Modern imaging facilities that utilize the newest technology for diagnosis and treatment are required.
  • Digital data containing records of investigations conducted in different departments and laboratories will be available.
  • Additionally, departments will need to outfit themselves with air-conditioned, fully functional blood banks that can administer component therapy.
  • Every department should have a state-of-the-art teaching space with audio-visual capabilities and enough space to accommodate a sufficient number of students for case studies and practical exercises.
  • A departmental library should be established in each department, containing all of the necessary textbooks and periodicals that the curriculum specifies.
  • A digital directory of departmental data should also be available, including activities, facilities, programs, courses, and other information.
  • Maintaining a digital record repository is imperative to monitor the progress of investigations conducted in the respective laboratories.

Conclusion:

Every medical college shall have a prescribed number of cameras at the prescribed locations of cameras with Close Circuit Cameras, as prescribed by the National Medical Commission," the NMC said about close circuit cameras. These have been published to provide a safe and secure place for future doctors and medical staff so that our nation remains ready for any type of huge number of patients. The goal of the PGMEB's PGMSR-2023 guidelines is to guarantee the best possible postgraduate medical education, with an emphasis on technology, faculty, infrastructure, and overall training quality. Therefore, these measures and initiatives will be very fruitful for PG students in the upcoming years.
