In India, NEET is the ticket to MBBS. To apply for the NEET examination, you need Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in 12th grade from the science stream. Over 20 lakh students take the NEET plunge each year, but only a handful secure spots in medical colleges. Hence, it is tough climb to the top colleges in India, reserved for the highest scorers. But not everyone gets that golden chance.
For many, the best bet is looking beyond India for their MBBS. Abroad, in countries like Russia, China, or Bangladesh, there are options with reasonable fees and top-notch education. It is a solid alternative for students aiming to excel in medicine without the uncertainty of college admissions back home. With an accredited MBBS degree from abroad, a student will be primed to tackle any medical obstacle.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has been in the spotlight since its formation in 2019, following an act of Parliament. The commission, established through the National Medical Commission Act, of 2019, officially kicked off its duties on September 25, 2020.
But things got heated when a draft proposal concerning Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) emerged in April 2021. Taking all the feedback onboard, the NMC acted swiftly, rolling out the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations on November 18, 2021.
For students planning an MBBS abroad, these regulations brought reassurance. The new notification dictates NMC rules for foreign medical graduates internship. I declare that once foreign medical graduates pass the Indian medical licensing exam and fulfill related procedures, they can practice in India. Therefore, No foreign medical graduate can practice in India without securing permanent registration in line with these regulations.
The NMC has announced certain criteria necessary for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) aiming for permanent registration in India. Meeting these criteria is essential for FMGs seeking permanent registration in India to practice medicine.
#1 The MBBS program abroad should span at least 54 months, inclusive of a minimum 12-month internship at the same medical institution.
#2 Foreign Medical Graduates need to cover specific subjects including Community Medicine, General Medicine, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Emergency or Casualty services, lab services, and related sub-specialties.
#3 Studies must have been conducted in English, the official medium of instruction in the university.
#4 The theoretical, practical, and clinical training undertaken should match the standards of an MBBS course in India.
#5 A mandatory 12-month internship should be completed at the same institution where other parts of the course were pursued. This internship involves practical training across various clinical subjects specified earlier.
The whole course, training, and internship must happen at the same foreign medical institution where the primary medical qualification is obtained. None of the training or internship should take place in India or any other country apart from where the course was pursued. Additionally, the entire foreign medical graduation course should be finished within ten years from when the course began.
