A four-year program in physiotherapy is pursued by individuals aspiring to become physiotherapists. The role of a physiotherapist involves evaluating, diagnosing, and providing treatment for individuals facing physical impairments, disabilities, or injuries. Prospective students interested in a physiotherapy career frequently inquire about the necessity of clearing NEET to enroll in a bachelor's program. This article will explore is NEET required for Physiotherapy in Government college.

Understanding the New Regulations about UG Physiotherapy

Admission to undergraduate-level Physiotherapy courses now requires successful completion of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). The Interim Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (ICAHP) has introduced this mandatory requirement while releasing the draft curriculum for Physiotherapy. According to the ICAHP, students enrolling in the Physiotherapy program "must have participated in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET)." After undergoing review and receiving approval from the ICAHP, the draft curriculum for Physiotherapy was made public, inviting comments and views from the general public.

The National Eligibility and Admission Test (NEET) serves as a national-level entrance examination in India. It plays a pivotal role in determining admission to undergraduate medical (MBBS) and dental (BDS) programs across various universities in the medical and dental fields throughout the country. Administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, NEET exam results establish the merit list, influencing eligibility for application to these programs.

In India, over 300 institutions are offering the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) program. Admission criteria vary, with some institutions considering merit in Class XII board exams, while others require specific entrance exams like NEET. Importantly, clearing the NEET entrance exam is optional for enrollment in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy program.

Upon completing the BPT course, graduates can explore diverse career paths, including roles such as Physiotherapist, Researcher, Lecturer, Home care physiotherapist, Sports physio rehabilitator, and Medical coding analyst.

In delineating the criteria for admission to the Bachelor of Physiotherapy and outlining the selection process, the draft stipulates, "Admission to the Bachelor of Physiotherapy course will be based on eligibility and NEET is compulsory for Physiotherapy for this purpose. No candidate will be granted admission without having appeared in the University Entrance admission test. Additionally, candidates have the option to seek admission through NEET."

Clarifying the prerequisites for the undergraduate physiotherapy program, the draft curriculum specifies that students entering the PT program must have successfully completed their secondary school studies.

The prescribed qualifications and Bachelor of Physiotherapy eligibility are as follows:

  1. Completion of the 10+2 education level with a minimum of 50% marks from an accredited institute.
  2. The successful conclusion of the 10+2 level with mandatory courses in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
  3. Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years old at the time of applying for admission.
  4. Candidates belonging to SC/ST or other backward classes must attain a minimum of 40% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology combined during the qualifying examination.

As mentioned earlier, there are two pathways to qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Physiotherapy program. One avenue involves taking the NEET exam, while the other entails utilizing non-NEET methods. However, candidates must fulfill both the aforementioned requirements and any additional criteria set forth by the specific institute they intend to enroll in.

In sum, the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) program is dedicated to enhancing physical well-being and overall quality of life. Physiotherapists play a pivotal role in rehabilitating and treating individuals facing diverse medical conditions, injuries, and disabilities. The Bachelor of Physiotherapy eligibility is structured to encompass practical clinical training, allowing students to gain valuable real-world experience by working with patients under the mentorship of seasoned professionals. If you are planning to pursue this, please follow the above-mentioned criteria and guidelines.
